I've been back to running since I had the baby 8 weeks ago and it is tough! I feel like I did when I just started running for the first time ever. I was overweight, led a sedentary lifestyle and never ran in my life. From there, I walk/ran until I could comfortably run a 5K. I remember when running 3 miles seemed so unattainable.

Less than two years after I started running, I ran a full marathon. The beginning of 2012 was my best racing yet - a 5K PR in Feb (Super Bowl in Novi), 10K PR in March (ShamRock N Roll in Plymouth), and 3 half marathon PRs shortly thereafter (Rock CF in Grosse Ile, Martian in Dearborn and Let's Move in Mt. Clemens). 5 races, 5 PRs and I was on my way to train for my second full marathon and hopefully take 30-45 mins off my time.

Then I got pregnant, was diagnosed with placenta previa, and told not to run. Man, did my free time really open up. I stopped running mid-July and only just atarted again mid-Feb, just 3 and a half weeks after my daughter was born.

In a random turn of events, my mom found a like-new treadmill in my grandpa's basement at the same time I was looking to buy one... Three days later a treadmill arrived in my living room. Thank goodness too, since I was not able to get outside to run as much as I thought I would be able to with a newborn.

my view from the loud treadmill - sleeping baby girl and tv I can't hear and apparently our closed captioning doesn't work...

For the past two weeks, I've been slowly but surely increasing my mileage, just a quarter mile at a time, but I'm up to running 2.5 miles. My mother in law came over Thursday and I got outside for a run and it felt great!!

I just signed up for my first post-baby race - Let's Move 5K in Mt. Clemens. I was hoping to run this half marathon for the third year in a row, but I know that's not realistic. So, I talked my sisters, husband, mom, mother in law and various other family members to doing the 5K, too. Selfishly, this way I know I'll have someone to push the baby in the stroller (or stay home with her if it's bad weather) so I can run my own race :)

That race is on April 27th, so I have six weeks to comfortably cover 3.1 miles and increase my speed in doing so. Again, it's just like I'm a beginner again, which isn't all that bad, I just had to get myself in a different mindset. One thing is for sure: I want to get my fitness back and be a good, active role model for our daughter.
I HAD to but this bathing suit the other day as it is so cute (and I hate bikinis on babies). Yes, there's still snow outside, but I couldn't resist.

Being a mom is great - the absolute best feeling in the world!!! I go back to work next week (just Thurs & Fri), so we'll see how I do being away from her and keeping up on my running. Wish me luck!Rose (Hacker Half Marathon)http://www.blogger.com/profile/01554370616892305395noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6829869205188084982.post-34768902880327653462013-02-14T20:35:00.000-05:002013-02-14T20:35:18.681-05:00Happy V Day and I finally went running!

Happy Valentine's Day from Lindsay!

This was the first time we tried out her new leggings. The idea is great so she can wear all those cute onesies she's received but not be freezing. Plus, they should be great for diaper changes. BUT, this outfit lasted 10 minutes tops before she had a huge poop-splosion all over her onesie, leggings AND Daddy's pants! I laughed so hard my incision hurt!

Anywho, I've never cared much for V Day, even when my husband and I were dating, it's just such an annoying holiday. So, unlike many other men out there, he's totally off the hook :)

I went out yesterday for my first run in 6+ months and it was a success. My OB cut off my running pretty early and I was pretty sedentary (per her direction) for the remainder of the pregnancy. Now, just 3.5 weeks out from delivery (a week overdue, induced for 2 days and ultimate c-section), I headed out the door while baby and daddy napped.

AND IT WAS AWESOME!!

I finally got the chance to try out my new bondi band! I ran an entire mile without stopping and walked another mile for fun. It felt so great, I went out and did it again today :) Made it another mile running and then walking more with my doggy. Other than sore quads, I feel great! No pain and the runner's high still exists. Not sure what the plan is from here on out, but I hope it continues to go this smoothly!!Rose (Hacker Half Marathon)http://www.blogger.com/profile/01554370616892305395noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6829869205188084982.post-51255473499825194872013-02-08T15:34:00.000-05:002013-02-08T15:34:03.582-05:00We're parents!

Pat and I welcomed our first child, Lindsay Kate, into the world on January 19th at a whopping 9 lbs 5.5 oz and 21 3/4 inches long (which is funny since my sister's daughter who is 10 weeks old currently weighs 10 lbs and is 22 inches long!)
Here's her obligatory Michigan pic - she's a super fan already :) and that is a 6 month outfit - and not that big...
do you think she looks like a cabbage patch doll?
Yes, still pregnant. 38.5 weeks. Granted our due date isn't until Jan 10th, but I've been off work since December 21st and am bored!! I just want baby to come so I have something to do - yes, I do realize how crazy this is.

I'm feeling good - getting uncomfortable/tired/winded easily, but nothing miserable. I haven't slept more than 4 hours at a time in the past week, so I guess that makes me 'ready' to have a newborn. The good news is since I am already off work (I work in a school and we're on break anyway), it doesn't matter if I have normal sleep or not. It's cool to sleep from 5-8pm and then again from 6-10am - isn't that what everyone does?!!

My husband really wants a tax-credit baby - apparently we get an extra $5K if this baby is born in 2012 - but I don't see that happening in the next 22 hours. I've had no labor pains/contractions/symptoms at all, so that's not gunna happen. Honestly, I think I'll go after my due date, but who knows.

In the mean time, I've been relaxing, putting my feet up, catching up on some good books and watching some great old school movies. A Time to Kill, A League of Their Own, A Few Good Men, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, you know, the good stuff :)

I hope you all had a great Christmas and any other holiday you celebrate. Happy New Year!! Still not running; now 35 weeks pregnant and quickly coming up on our Jan 10th due date :)

For our family baby shower, I wanted to do something special for my husband since first-time dads often get shafted. So I googled a bunch of stuff and tried to come up with some fun present ideas. There wasn't much out there at all.

So here is what I can up with to give him at the end of the shower when he arrived to help pack up the gifts:
So here we are, just 4.5 weeks from the due date and I'm still feeling great. Even have a come-back marathon in mind: Charlevoix June 2013. Anyone in?

I am getting excited for our baby shower this Saturday; it'll be fun to see both of our families and talk about the arrival of baby Hacker! (Due date is January 10th)

I have to confess that while I was first obsessed with updating our registry online to be sure I did plenty of research on every item, I have kinda been checking it now to see what's been purchased :) I mean, it'll still be a surprise who bought it at the shower, right? Is that bad? I had the same problem when we got married, too. Anyone else ever do this?

So I'm currently 29 weeks pregnant and still feeling great! Baby is apparently the size of an acorn squash now. I get tired at the end of the day and need to rest and put my feet up when I get home, but that's about it in terms of pregnancy symptoms. I've been very lucky so far and hope it continues for the remaining 11 weeks!!

For our shower this weekend, I wanted to include my husband - he's coming by at the end to help load up the gifts and I wanted to get him something special and help him feel included as well. Clearly I'm new to this, but I picked up a few things as a 'New Daddy Survival Kit' just for him. I'll give more details after this weekend on the off chance he actually reads this, but here's a preview which is exciting since the Lions finally won today:
By 'we' he means he'll come up with the idea, I'll do all the work, and he'll show up at the table. Works for me!

This morning I got up early to stuff the bird and get it in the oven.

I've only cooked a turkey one other time in my life - for Thanksgiving 2005 when we lived in Baton Rouge and weren't able to come home for the holiday. Minus leaving some of the gizzards inside (I didn't know you had to pull stuff out of each end) and buying biscuits instead of butter rolls, it turned out pretty good.

I don't cook meals often - and I mean that in the way that I am in the kitchen often baking desserts and treats and making snacks, just not preparing actual dinners - that's my husband's role. He's the BBQer/dinner-maker and I'm the set-up/clean-up/make desserts and drinks person. It works for us.

Today we kept the menu simple and it turned out delicious! Just a little googling to get me started...

And everything turned out divine! I even made homemade gravy for the first time by de-glazing the roaster. (I didn't like it, but it turned out very pretty - good thing I had can stuff warming up as a back up).

Green bean casserole like my mom always makes (I never liked as a kid but my husband LOVES), mashed potatoes, white and dark meat, wet and dry stuffing (I'm a dry person, my husband wet), homemade and can gravy, and rolls rounded out the table. We'll have to work on getting some color in there next time. Man, did it turn out good.

If I'm only going to cook dinner a handful of times a year, I totally make it count! Now to watch the Detroit Lions not embarrass us - just like real Thanksgiving. Happy Fake Thanksgiving everyone!Rose (Hacker Half Marathon)http://www.blogger.com/profile/01554370616892305395noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6829869205188084982.post-14764655436049575512012-09-27T22:20:00.002-04:002012-09-28T10:47:58.493-04:00We have a crib!!

I threw an awesome wedding shower for a friend of mine and made lots of goodies:
The whole day was a lot of fun and my friend had a great time!

I finished painting the finishing touches in the nursery this weekend, so it's ready for furniture! And the very next day, my parents suprised us by bringing over our crib! I hadn't announced our registry to anyone yet, but my mom knew what was up and what a great surprise it was! Pat and I will put this together soon and then will only have to wait on our dresser to be in stock at IKEA :) Things are coming along nicely :)

Since I can't run, lift things, walk more than leisurely, or stress my body in any way, any suggestions as to what I can do?

My house is clean, I made cookies, rice krispie treats and fudge this weekend and the pantry is reorganized. I have 15 more weeks of 'light-duty' and need something to fill my time... Read any good books lately? The weather was great, we had lots of great food and it was awesome to see everyone I hadn't seen since we've been pregnant. Fun to share the news and get some random advice.
We did coney dogs for the first time and they were a huge hit. Definitely going to bring them back again.

We had our 20 week ultrasound a couple weeks ago and while everything looks great with the baby, I have been diagnosed with placenta previa which means I had to stop running :( I was really bummed about it at first in terms of missing hanging out with my friends and feeling so great after a run, but of course that didn't last long. It's what's best for the baby and I can do it no problem.

So, I haven't been out for a run in three weeks but I'm finding ways to keep active and see my friends. When we would usually meet for 6 miles during the week, I'll meet them all to chat, send them off and then walk around town until they finish. Walking isn't nearly the same as running, but I'll take what I can get. When they're all done, we still go out to dinner, so I'm still getting my friend time in.

We've been prepping the nursery and I'm proud to say it is almost done! I patched all the holes, prepped the walls and painted the entire thing 'pebble gray'. Now we'll just wait for that to cure to put up the fun border I absolutely love and be done.

Registering for baby stuff was fun and not as stressful as I'd imagined, so that was a fun not-running event I was able to enjoy. Now I have to wait patiently for our shower in November. My husband wants to go out and buy everything right now and fending him off has become pretty time consuming, which has been good since I have extra time on my hands :)

Other than that, I've still been feeling great! I haven't had any symptoms that come along with previa and have been able to enjoy every other part of my everyday life, so I'm good to go. I just hope the second part of this pregnancy goes as smoothly.

This is my 200th post! I'm not a big time blogger, but I enjoy sharing my life with many of you and learning about you along the way. I've learned so much about running and enjoyed being able to look back on my development as a runner. I still have to laugh for not considering myself a 'real runner' even after I ran 3 half marathons on my own; I was still too nervous to join a running group :)

Today I'm exactly 20 weeks pregnant and my baby is apparently the size of a banana! I've had NO typical pregnancy symptoms (ie nausea, back ache, heartburn) and have loved my first pregnancy so far. My husband complains it's boring, but I argue every time that boring is a good thing :)

I currently have 58 followers and have for awhile now. 58 is my hubby's favorite number - his football number in high school and our anniversary - May 8th, 2010.

6.5 miles is the longest I've run at one time since being pregnant. And I loved it. I still have the okay from my OB to run - as long as it isn't too intense and I'm okay with that. I still love writing down my mileage on my running calendar on the fridge, even if there are week-long gaps from when I had to wait between doctor visits.

70.3 is the distance one of my awesome running buddies (above, in orange) covered this past Sunday. Four of us made the 2+ hour road trip to cheer her on and it was awesome! I would highly recommend spectating a triathalon to anyone that hasn't done so yet. It was my first and definitely not my last.

That's a maternity skirt from a long run about 3 weeks ago :)

I got clearance from the OB on Wed to run again :) Just nothing too intense until my ultrasound in another couple of weeks. I was so thrilled once I got out of her office!!

However, I still haven't run :( It's been a busy and stressful week at work and all attempts to meet friends for a run were thwarted. Not the end of the world - I'll get out there soon. Just knowing I can brings a huge smile to my face!

This morning, I went to find a pair of workout pants (read: stretchy) and one of my husband's t-shirts to throw on to run a few errands. I was elated when I found a pair of yoga pants that I had forgotten all about! I always thought they were so sorority-girl but as soon as I tried them on I loved them!

I bought them 6 weeks ago for a field trip at work to go ice skating and forgot all about them. I was like a kid on Christmas morning! Now I don't think I'll wear anything else until the baby's born.

My hubby is all about having a boy - we aren't finding out until the baby is born in January - and keeps bringing home a bunch of boy stuff - football onsies, dinosaur pjs, you name it, he's bought it. In turn, I found some fun girly stuff to put on my wish list.

As much as I'd like to think that these extra hormones won't get the best of me, I found myself in tears over Susan Boyle's first audition to Britain's Got Talent. Don't ask me why I even watched that clip - my husband is a chronic shitty you tube video watcher - and I had never seen it before. I just lost it. The crowd was just so mean as she introduced herself and the she totally rocked it. I was so proud of her and crying like a baby at how great she was!!

It sucks not running, but I still wake up bright and early at 6am on Saturdays, cause that's just what I do. So this weekend I made it worth it. I've been emptying our spare room to turn it into a nursery for two months now, slowly but surely and now it's time to speed it up a bit.

We've lived in our house for almost 4 years and this spare room/office has become a catch-all for everything. High School yearbooks? check. Drying rack for running clothes? check. books from childhood? check. Wedding receipts from 2+ years ago? Got em. Why? I don't know.

Now that the room is just about empty, it was time to tear down one entire wall of wallpaper and a room-full of ugly border. The border was bordered (yeah, weird word choice) with trim nailed into the wall. I started with that. Thought it would be so hard to remove - yeah, it was styrofoam trim. Who does that? Needless to say, it came off easily.

I found an awesome homemade mixture of ammonia, fabric softener and water that helped the paper come off so easily, all in perfect little sheets just about. Thank you, Pinterest! It worked way better than any store-bought thing I've tried in the past. Best $5 I've ever spent.

The border was a little annoying, but made much easier after I woke up my husband and took him to Home Depot to buy this:
So much more helpful than this dinky thing we bought when my nieces and nephew were staying with us and couldn't reach the sink.

Truth be told, I really wanted a Home Depot hot dog with warm melted cheese. That's why I woke my husband up and then I thought about the platform ladder thing. And yes, the hot dog was thoroughly heated so I wasn't introducing salmonella or whatever hot dogs carry to my unborn baby.

After washing down the walls to get the last bits of glue, all I have to do is patch up the holes where the crappy trim ripped the drywall and we'll be ready to paint. We already have the color at home and ready to go, so I have no excuses :)

I find out tomorrow morning if I can resume running and I of course hope my OB says yes, but my husband hopes for no so I continue to be this productive around the house! Screw him, we still have five months for the room to get ready!

Wish me luck :)

Rose (Hacker Half Marathon)http://www.blogger.com/profile/01554370616892305395noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6829869205188084982.post-65063968319122546432012-08-01T18:06:00.000-04:002012-08-01T20:30:48.622-04:00Spoke a tiny bit too soonThanks guys for all the pregnancy love! We're just so excited and I wanted to be sure I met with everyone I wanted to tell in person before going "live" on the blog.

As soon as I hit "publish", we had our first set of mini-complications with this pregnancy. Nothing major and you all don't want me to go into detail, but I spent a lot of Monday at the Women's ER making sure everything is okay. And it is. Thank goodness. Baby's heartbeat is strong and he or she even kicked the ultrasonographer a couple times. I haven't been able to feel any movement yet, but the ultrasonogrpaher was certainly that's what the loud thud was.

So now I'm off running until my regularly scheduled OB appt next Wednesday. It's only a week from today, but it seems like forever. I really shouldn't be mad, since running is NOT more important than this lovely baby growing inside me, but I was just getting back into it from almost a month off and I don't want to stop.

Hopefully the appt next week will clear me again and I'll be back running soon. Until then, I'll be walking (although clearly you all know that it isn't the same feeling after a good run) and a friend gave me a pregnancy yoga dvd that I'm going to try.

This is just a minor bump in the road. Up until now, I've felt great! Everyone keeps asking me how I feel and if I'm nausous and it almost annoys me now since I've been feeling so good :) But I know that I'm very lucky and I hope this pregnancy continues to be this simple. A week off from running is a piece of cake.Rose (Hacker Half Marathon)http://www.blogger.com/profile/01554370616892305395noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6829869205188084982.post-17222022283846150172012-07-28T18:19:00.001-04:002012-07-28T20:00:22.349-04:00Great News!

The reason my hip and glute were bothering me is the same as why I haven't been very active on my blog lately:

We're Pregnant!

Yeah, I totally peed on that and then took a picture of it to show everyone :)

We're so excited for our first child!! We're due January 10th and couldn't be more thrilled!

All the hip/glute pain I had in early June was all due to pregnancy hormones that loosened the tendons/muscles/ligaments in my hip and pelvis to make space for the baby. My PT and OB seemed to agree that it just happened quicker than normal to me than in most women, causing some discomfort early on.

Since the end of June I've been pain-free and built my mileage back up slowly but surely. My long run is up to 6.5 miles and I've been feeling great!

So far, other than the brief hip/glute pain, this pregnancy has been a piece of cake! No nausea at all. I was ravenous for a couple months - eating everything in sight - and then really tired for a few weeks. As of now, I feel great!
Rose (Hacker Half Marathon)http://www.blogger.com/profile/01554370616892305395noreply@blogger.com13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6829869205188084982.post-83958505431385820382012-06-24T10:56:00.000-04:002012-06-24T10:56:45.797-04:00I got cleared from the PT last Monday - which was really exciting! Instead of running on the alter-G treadmill that day, my PT put me on the real treadmill, which left me grinning from ear to ear :) I walked 5 mins to warm up, run 30 seconds and walk 4.5 mins for a total of 35 minutes. It wasn't as boring as it normally would be, since I was so excited to be running again!!

I planned to run a couple slow miles on Thursday with the group and then 4 for my 'long' run on Saturday with the group as well. I got to the Thursday run and knocked out 3 SLOW miles, but they felt like crap. My butt was tight the entire time, not painful, but tight and sore.

Then Friday was a sore day. Not quite limping like the original injury, but sore. So I punked out on the Saturday morning 'long' run until the soreness subsides. The last thing I want to do is go back out there too quickly and re-injure it. I'm a little up in the air about the GR full in October, but there's still currently 16 weeks until the race, so I've got time. (or at least I'm going to keep telling myself that)

So, what have I been doing for three weeks with essentially no running? Lots of crap around the house. And lots of sleeping :)

I painted out upstairs spare bathroom - well, my husband's bathroom. I primarily use the one in our bedroom and he gets bounced to this one. After I finished it, I still have a bit of jealousy since his looks way better than mine now.

When we bought the house, this bathroom was so bright, the color was very 'coral'. Bright pink and obnoxious, so it had to be painted right away. I can't even find a picture of it originally; it is entirely possible that I never took one. Here it is with 2 layers of primer before I bought a roller or decided on a new color.

Pat chose a green color and we painted it right away. The problem is that the green was very bright, very 'shamrock shake' from McDonald's. After four years of that, and never completing any other decorating in the room, I decided to change it up again.

The new bathroom is now our 'Sayulita' bathroom. Sayulita is a little city on the west side of Mexico, where we went on our honeymoon. We brought back a few cute ceramic critters and wanted to display them somewhere and this turned out to be the perfect place!

We took some of my favorite pictures from our honeymoon and blew them up to 8x10s. I looked all over for frames to fit the theme, but I couldn't find anything. So I bought plain white frames and bought acrylic paint that matched the ceramic lizard, pajaro, turtle and frog. I'm so happy with the way they came out!
Now all I have to do is try to have my husband keep it clean :)
Rose (Hacker Half Marathon)http://www.blogger.com/profile/01554370616892305395noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6829869205188084982.post-19370374280125244432012-06-16T22:40:00.003-04:002012-06-16T22:40:59.742-04:00Still not running...Yeah, that's right. I haven't run since the 2 miles I put on the Alter G treadmill last week. Yuck. I go back to PT Monday afternoon and will get the good word then as to if I can run outside yet. The good news is that I haven't had any pain in my hip or butt for over a week.

I've just been resting and relaxing since I got injured - which I've never done!! In the almost 3 years I've been running, I've never taken more than 3 days off, so this feels weird.

I've found all sorts of crazy things to do in my extra time: sort through and organize our bookshelves, clean the kitchen cupboards, bake a batch of sugar cookies every night, clean out the garage, paint and re-decorate the bathroom... you know, all very important things!! Good thing I work at a school where everyone eats the cookies so I haven't gained a bunch of weight yet.

I'm hoping for outdoor running clearance on Monday. I'd really like to get back outside next Saturday with the group; I miss them all!Rose (Hacker Half Marathon)http://www.blogger.com/profile/01554370616892305395noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6829869205188084982.post-86033269141294484392012-06-10T19:08:00.003-04:002012-06-10T19:11:43.177-04:00Alter G Treadmill RunningSo just one week after my hip/butt muscle pull thingy while on a run, I was up and running again on an Alter G Treadmill at PT. My PT is very confident that I'll heal just fine and soon, too! I'm happy to report that I haven't had any actual pain since Wednesday and have only been in slight discomfort a bit since then.

Friday morning I rocked out 3 hours at PT! Heat, stretching, 40 mins of elliptical (BOOOORING!), 20
mins of some leg lift/recumbant bike thing, more stretching, ice and
then 30 mins on the Alter G. It was so cool and so weird at the same time!
Imagine getting into a pair of spandex shorts over your own,
with an inflatable water ring around your waist. Then step into a
vinyl/nylon enclosure on top of a treadmill and zip said spandex to the
enclosure. That's weird in and of itself but then the machine inflates
and it gets even weirder. Air all over from the bottom of the treadmill up
to my butt.

The weird thing is that the shorts pull away from your
waist, so it 'pushes'/connects to you around the mid of your butt
cheeks. Weirdest feeling of my life. So running with only feeling 50 %
of your body weight is so COOL and WEIRD!! It felt great, pain-wise on
my body, but was the weirdest feeling ever, like I was drunk! Clearly,
I'm not that great at describing the feeling.

So good news I got running again, but it was so weird. Hopefully I'll be
back to 100% soon. I LOVE the guys at the Running Institute - they
clearly know what they're doing and will stop at nothing to get you back
out there. Just Friday, there were TWO olympic trial contestants and
then an old man having trouble keeping his balance - LOVE the variety of
people in there.

So to fill my running-less weekend, I found an awesome cake shop with lots of fun cookie cutters and I went to town this morning with sugar cookies.

And here's a little something for our running group since I finally found number cookie cutters!

Hopefully I'll be out on the actual road in a couple weeks, but until then, I'll be rocking out all weird-like on the Alter G!
Hooray :) My right hip and glute are still tight and a bit sore, but I haven't had any movements that dropped me to my knees since early Wednesday. Talk about progress!!

My insurance covers PT - which also includes running on the alter-gravity treadmill - so I'm heading in first thing in the morning. And if I come out like a sweaty mess, I've made plans to head to my friend's house to shower before work. Good thing she works from home, near my office :)

Thanks for your tips and tricks and all your support. It's amazing that I feel like I 'know' all of you and we're real friends! Thanks for that; it's really helped me stay positive throughout this really annoying week. It is weird how much time I seem to have now that I'm not running. Not that I've done anything productive, just read more blogs and wasted many hours on pinterest!Rose (Hacker Half Marathon)http://www.blogger.com/profile/01554370616892305395noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6829869205188084982.post-31473051647024774432012-06-06T20:42:00.003-04:002012-06-06T21:05:38.090-04:00Update on my butt

It still hurts.

I got into the Running Institute/Michigan Rehabilitation Specialists Tuesday morning and met with the best PT they have. He thinks I have an SI joint (sacroiliac) injury. It's my right hip/glute that is tight and painful. However, as he did all the stretches and tests, it all hurt WAY more when he manipulated my left leg. I jumped off the table a couple of times it hurt so bad.

After some preliminary tests, he put a huge heating pad on my butt for 20 minutes and then had me loosen up on the elliptical for 25 minutes. Now, good thing I stopped in on Monday after my MD appt to set up my first appt here. I saw everyone in work out gear, so thought I better wear that too. Had I just called, I would have showed up in my work clothes, ie a summer dress, and looked like an idiot.

So I packed my work clothes and got all sweaty on the elliptical. Man that thing was so boring for 25 mins! There is nothing to look at except the receptionists not doing any work and complaining over and over about how slow it was that morning. 25 brutal minutes later, I was done.

I foam rolled (kinda dumbly, I'm not good with that thing yet) and then had the PT stretch me out a bunch more. Two hours after I walked in the door, I was sweaty and on my way to work. The good news is that my PT thinks this is totally fixable, in fact he wants me running on the alter-gravity treadmill right away. He thinks I'll be just fine, which is promising.

I'll be seeing him three times a week for awhile and my biggest issue is how I'm going to go to work afterward and not stink all day. They don't have showers at PT (I asked) and we don't have any at school, either. I can't go sweat my butt off in the morning and then change into a summer dress and rock a sweaty pony tail all day. And they're closed by the time I get out of work in the evening.

The good news is this is what I'm most concerned about, not the injury itself. I've been running almost 3 years and this is the first injury I've had. Not too bad. I consider myself lucky so far. Since it's muscular I figure it's gotta be fixable, or at least more fixable than a broken bone.

Here's my hubby and me hammin' in up for a pic at last night's Tiger game :) We didn't win, but that super rope around my next was DEEE-licious!

I'll live. And I'm not too crabby yet :) First step: get muscle pain in my butt to go away when I walk. That's a priority. In the meantime, I'm keeping my head up and not getting too crabby.Rose (Hacker Half Marathon)http://www.blogger.com/profile/01554370616892305395noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6829869205188084982.post-90407522487832590742012-06-04T20:34:00.000-04:002012-06-04T20:34:13.793-04:00DX: Gluteal TendinitisI didn't run the DX AA half yesterday :( I got up, did my pre-race routine, met the girls at 7am to hit the shuttle to the start line as if I was going to run. After parking, I tried to jog around the block and didn't make it 10 feet. PAIN. and a LOT of it. my right leg just couldn't move forward.

So I walked the block and returned to my car to ditch the singlet and bib and put on a cotton shirt. Cotton on race day. ewww. I ended up walking 5+ miles and cheering on the runners with our other team members. It was fun and a lot less depressing than staying at home sulking over my injury.

I got into the MD this morning and he diagnosed me with gluteal tendonitis. For the record, he didn't seem to know what he was doing and admitted he doesn't know much about athletes and their injuries, so he sent me over to the Running Institute to be evaluated. (I would have gone right there but I have an HMO and needed the referral).

I have an early morning appt there tomorrow and I can't wait. I already know one of the owners really well and feel very confident in their skill sets, so I'm looking forward to it. I was in more pain today than yesterday, walking is becoming annoying. I have a limp cause it hurts to lift my right leg each time. Getting up out of a chair, or out of my car is the worst so far.

So I'll be in touch :) Hopefully some stretching and manipulating by the experts at the Running Institute will help me get back on the road. Or at least have some relief to not be miserable limping to the bathroom in the middle of the night!Rose (Hacker Half Marathon)http://www.blogger.com/profile/01554370616892305395noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6829869205188084982.post-86287478838098815882012-06-03T05:52:00.000-04:002012-06-03T05:52:16.806-04:00This morning's DX AA plansHere we are... 545am and will be leaving for the Dexter-Ann Arbor half marathon soon. I'm still not sure if I'll be running it this morning. Either way, I'll be there. I'm going in my running clothes with back ups (sweats and pb&j) in the car. I've foam rolled, stretched, iced, relaxed and might be able to run.

I'll meet the ladies as planned (in Ann Arbor), carpool to the starting line (in Dexter) and after jogging around a bit, see how I feel. If I have no pain in my right hip/glute, I'll run the half conservatively for fun. If I do have pain in that first mile or so of jogging before the race, I'll head back with one of the girls from the group and volunteer at the 501 water station at mile 11.

Either way, I'll be there for this awesome event I still haven't run yet. If I can't run it comfortably, I'll stay and support my friends. I've tried to sway my mind that I won't be disappointed if I don't run this race this year since:

1) it's not the end of the world, there are ALWAYS other races
2) I PR'd THREE half marathons in 2012 already. All within 7 weeks of each other
3) There will be other DX AA races I can do
4) this isn't my "A" race and I haven't had my heart set on it for real for real (like my first full)
5) how dumb would I be if I ran and injured myself worse

So, here I go... I'll let you know what happens :)

DNS (did not start) > DNF (did not finish).... if you're making the smart choice, not a lazy one in my opinionRose (Hacker Half Marathon)http://www.blogger.com/profile/01554370616892305395noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6829869205188084982.post-15652164974754278722012-06-01T20:54:00.001-04:002012-06-01T20:54:29.969-04:00Yikes! My First Running InjuryIt's true... after two and a half years of running I've come across my first injury and it sucks!! It's my right hip and it hurts. a lot. well, more than it should at least.

I've kept it a secret and ignored it since March-ish and hoped it would go away. During my March and April half marathons, it would kinda hurt/twinge a little in the last three miles or so, but never after the run, so I thought no big deal.

I've cut back my mileage in the month of May and hoped it would go away completely, but I was wrong. I ran 5.5 not-too-hilly miles last night with the girls and by mile 3 I felt it back in my hip. I can't explain it too well: right hip soreness, kinda painful in my upper right butt cheek, going around my hip to the front and it feels muscular.

I know, easy to make a diagnosis, right? The good news is that it feels muscular or tendon-like, not bone pain/fracture style. But last night after the run and even after stretching it out, it was sore as can be. It was even painful as I slept, waking me up a few times. I got up and came downstairs to get an ice pack around 3am and it felt a bit better in the morning.

Today was a bit sore, but not horrible. Certainly not normal feeling, with a slight limp half of the day. So I have an appt with a sports massage therapist in the morning and I'll see how I feel after that. I'm supposed to run the Dexter Ann Arbor Half Marathon on Sunday.

If it is still sore tomorrow, I may have to have my first DNS :( This sucks, I want to run this race so badly!! Send healing, no big deal right hip pain thoughts my way :)Rose (Hacker Half Marathon)http://www.blogger.com/profile/01554370616892305395noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6829869205188084982.post-80483732240647609732012-05-29T20:36:00.001-04:002012-05-29T20:36:41.835-04:00I need a hit!Tonight's co-ed slow pitch softball game was fun, but I failed at getting on base again :( We've only played three games so far and I've only been on base twice - both in the second game.

Starting up the season, I was so nervous about striking out or missing the ball at first base and I've been a steel trap on first and haven't even swung and missed! So that's good, but I barely ever get on base. I think I'm just used to swinging level from fast pitch for so many years that I'm having a hard time being patient, waiting for my pitch and swinging up.

Today, I grounded out to the pitcher on my first at bat, then flied out directly to the pitcher's mitt three times in a row! Can you believe that?

I don't want to be one of those girls that the other team brings their entire outfield in for, just cause I'm a girl. I'm not dainty and don't want to be an automatic out for my team.

Ahhh it's just so annoying. Other than the lack of base running, it's been a really fun season. I was so nervous about joining the team at the beginning but it really is a lot of fun playing and hanging out with my colleagues. I highly recommend it to anyone thinking about it.

Any tips for hitting it out of the park in slow pitch??Rose (Hacker Half Marathon)http://www.blogger.com/profile/01554370616892305395noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6829869205188084982.post-23145569606784344962012-05-28T18:32:00.001-04:002012-05-28T18:32:40.264-04:00Back from DC and Half this SundayDC was so much fun! I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy myself at all, being one of ten chaperones of our 7th grade trip, but our kids were so well behaved that I had a blast! My favorite part was the Newseum, which I had never been to before. The basement exhibit included the Unabomber and Oklahoma City bombing, both of which I remember vividly. I was in the 7th grade when the OK City bombing took place and seeing the news articles about them really took me back to that moment.
It didn't dawn on me until we were at the Pentagon memorial that our kids were only 3 years old on September 11, 2001. For me, that's one day I'll always remember exactly where I was and what I was doing and our kids have really only read about it. The memorial was beautiful and very creative (of course I forgot my camera that day).
We also visited the Air Force Memorial one morning. I've always noticed the three large 'antennae' on the drive from the airport to the city, but never knew what it was until now. They were enormous in real life.

Even with a 12 hour bus trip out there and 10 hours on the way back (lots of bus issues from MI-DC), it was a great time. I really enjoyed myself with the kids and other chaperones and am so glad I went.

However, I did not get in any running on the trip. I knew I wouldn't so I didn't even pack any running clothes. With a 6am wake up call and 'lights out' room checks until 1030-11pm each night, I was taking every minute of sleep I could get.

So when I returned late Wednesday night, I met the girls for a 6 miler Thursday evening. It was hilly, but good to be back in the swing of things. I hadn't run since the previous Friday and that's the longest I've taken off from running in over two years!!

The eight miles for our long run this Saturday were timed perfectly between rain storms and I think I'm ready to run the Dexter-Ann Arbor half this Sunday. I registered for this race forever ago and can't believe it's finally here :)
It'll be hot and hilly, but I plan to run it conservatively and have
fun... ie. not PR another half this year! Anyone else racing this
weekend?
