Some left over Let's Move thoughts

1)  Why do so many people run with headphones, especially in races?  I barely did when I ran by myself and now that I run with the group we don't at all.   But I'm a talker and like to chat it up with other people around me.  During the race last weekend, almost everyone had headphones in and I had no one to talk to :(

2)  I mentioned that Let's Move was not as fun as Martian was mostly because I didn't know many people running it and therefore had to focus on my own race.  Not that it is a bad thing, but just like numero uno, I'm a social person so I like looking for and talking to other people I know.  It's good to focus on yourself though, as this is now my half marathon PR race :)

3)  For the first time ever, my garmin time matched finish time exactly.  Could I now say that I'm perfect?  haha far from it :)

4)  Why do they start the shorter distances earlier than the longer?  Don't they want those who will be running the furthest to start first to beat the heat and get out of the way of the shorter distances?  Let's Move had two 5K waves at 8:15 and 8:30am.  Then two half waves at 8:45 and 9:00am.  What's with that?

  1. I agree that the longer distances should start first. But...I also don't like having a mixed finish. Trying to reel in a 1/2 while dodging perky 5kers is not my ideal finish line situation. It is too bad that more races can't be two day festivals, with the shorter races on one day and the main events on the other.

  2. Okay, social butterfly! I'm the same way, even when I would go out of town to run a race. Depending on how the courses were laid out, that is unusual to send the 5k off first?????

  3. Because I run faster with headphones! And they mask the sound of my breathing so I can convince myself that I'm not dying. On the same note, I'm too out of breath too talk!!!

  4. I never run a race with music. :-)

  5. If you want to be annoying you could try to talk to the headphone people and, once they notice that you're talking to them, they'll need to take their headphones out of their ears. Then, once they take 'em out, and ask what you were saying, just say "Nevermind" and speed off. :P

  6. I didn't like that the clock was wrong at the finish since we started later. There's probably no way around that, but I feel like I keep having to tell people, "I was really 15 minutes faster!" It was my first half though, so maybe that is normal.

I like talking and/or headphones. Either one is good! I would have talked to you.

  7. I never run outside with music......I like to hear nature all around me, not to mention any vehicles I might need to dodge! Indoors.....well, that's something else entirely. The sheer boredom of the dreadmill requires music to make it bearable. Part of the fun in racing is the interactions with those sharing the road with you.....headphones make that impossible. Sad.

  8. I run and race with music but I run by myself and a did race my last race with no music and didn't miss it at all. I don't visit during races though either. I also prove to listen to podcasts and audiobooks when I run, makes other miles fly by. Great job with your new PR!

  9. I believe it was the friend I made at mile 7 that got me to the finish in the time I did. Wouldn't of met him if I was wearing headphones.
